Early versions of typewriters made in the 1870s had some technical issues. The metal arm held and jammed words if keys were pressed fast or if a typewriter pressed adjacent keys simultaneously. To avoid this problem and for good typing, Christopher Latham Sholes designed many keyboard-like designs that solved the problem of typer jamming.
